Bradley family papers, 1774-1882.

Collection consists mainly of official and business correspondence to or about Stephen Bradley and his son, William C. Bradley. Topics include national and world affairs, and local legal, financial, and political matters in and around Westminster, Vt. Some personal correspondence includes a long series of letters between William Bradley and his son-in-law, Samuel G. Goodrich (Peter Parley). An anonymous letter written before the marriage of Goodrich and Bradley's daughter warns of Goodrich's character. Material pertaining to Stephen R. Bradley includes a series of letters, 1806-1808, from William Eaton to General Bradley on the subject of Eaton's 1804 adventures in the war with Tripoli and his efforts to restore the Pasha, Hamet Karamanli, to the throne. Bradley's replies, as well as copies of letters from other principals in the Tripoli fiasco are included. Other items of interest include a letter dated 5 May 1812, from David Austin to Stephen Row Bradley, stating that the people of New England are opposed to the U.S. going to war with Great Britain. Another letter dated 7 October 1824, from Philip Kingsley in Charlottesville, Va. to William C. Bradley, details General Lafayette's visit to Thomas Jefferson at Monticello. Kingsley also comments on the presidential campaign of 1824, and candidates William H. Crawford, Andrew Jackson, Henry Clay, and John Quincy Adams.
